César Guerra-Peixe (1914–1993) was a Brazilian composer, violinist, arranger, teacher, and researcher whose work holds a significant place in twentieth-century Brazilian music. Born in Petrópolis, he explored twelve-tone composition before developing a musical language deeply informed by Brazilian traditional cultures, particularly those of the Northeast. His research into regional musical practices enriched his compositions, bringing together rhythmic vitality, expressive individuality, and sophisticated compositional technique. His legacy encompasses concert music, popular music arrangements, teaching, and musicological research. Pianist and musicologist Pablo V. Marquine’s recording of Guerra-Peixe’s complete solo piano works comprises five volumes and 133 tracks, organized into Preludes, Solo Pieces, Albums, Suites, and Sonatas and Sonatinas. Completed and released in 2026, the collection offers a comprehensive perspective on the composer’s piano writing, revealing its stylistic diversity and engagement with Brazilian musical traditions. Supported by the Federal District’s Cultural Support Fund (FAC-DF), the project combines scholarly inquiry with artistic interpretation. Its international streaming distribution makes this repertoire accessible to audiences, performers, educators, and researchers, contributing to the preservation of Guerra-Peixe’s legacy and the wider recognition of Brazilian concert music.
